Context & Challenge

Inside a learning support platform for medical education, students needed to quickly find study materials across dozens of medical specialties. But the existing search experience was fragmented and often returned overwhelming or low-relevance results - slowing down their study flow and increasing frustration.

My approach

Discovery

To understand why students struggled to find content, I combined desk research (past surveys, heatmaps, usage data, NPS comments) with a new survey of 468 respondents, behavior analytics, and interviews with nine students. This helped us uncover where search was failing, how students categorized information, and what they expected from a more effective experience.

Prioritizing the problem & shaping the solution

Then I organized and led a Lean Inception workshop to align the team on the problem to solve, the features to deliver, and the definition of our MVP. As a group, we prioritized two key opportunities: How might we improve accuracy in search results? and How might we give students full visibility into all materials available for each topic?

Mobile interface showing search results for educational medical content, with filters and categorized lessons to help users find content quickly.

Based on what we decided the workshop, I sketched initial wireframes, refined them collaboratively, built a medium-fidelity navigable prototype, and conducted usability tests with five students. Finally, I designed the high-fidelity prototype and led the handoff with the engineers.

Search results interface of an educational platform showing grouped medical content, expandable topic components, and filtering options to improve content discovery and reduce cognitive load.

By grouping all content related to a medical topic into a single expandable component, we reduced fragmentation and made topic exploration more intuitive. We also added filtering options directly to search results. This reduced cognitive load, improved scannability, and helped students understand the full set of available resources at a glance.

Impact

After release, content consumption increased by 10%, driven by reduced friction in search and easier discovery of materials aligned with each student’s study journey.
